As well as the above position, Francis Shennan is Visiting Lecturer in Media Law on the M.Litt in Journalism and the M.Sc in Investigative Journalism at Strathclyde University, and has lectured at Napier and Glasgow Caledonian Universities. He has 30 years’ experience as a journalist on national newspapers including senior positions with the Sunday Times and National Union of Journalists, and is the winner of one Scottish and three UK Press awards.
He has given evidence to the Scottish Parliament’s Justice 1 Committee on the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Bill, addressed that Parliament’s Cross-Party Group on Culture and Media, the Scottish Government summit on the future of the newspaper industry, and the Law Society of Scotland. His papers have been published in the Communications Law Journal and presented at Bedfordshire University. His paper on Competition Law and Freelance Journalists, for which he received a Certificate European Employment Law through Kings College London, was used by the NUJ, as was a submission to the Central Arbitration Committee on the definition of journalists and journalists’ work.
He is the author of two non-fiction books: Flesh and Bones, a life of John Napier, and The McCann Takeover, the story of a football company take-over.
