About

I work on European interaction with the Middle East, especially Palestine/Israel, from the early 19th century onwards.  I have a particular interest in issues of identity creation, gender, the communication of social norms, and local interaction.  My present research project addresses Scottish and German missionary interaction with Palestine, and the implications for the creation of gender norms that arise in this context.

I am the initiator and one of the editors of the 'Christians in the Middle East' Network - an international scholarly community working on any aspect of Christians in the Middle East from the late 18th century onwards.  It also contains an ever-growing directory of publications (with reviews) on the topic.  Further details can be found by following the link on the 'Websites' section of my profile.

I am an Associate, and occasionally write for, Britain's premier think-tank on religion and public affairs, Ekklesia (see the 'Websites' section).

My personal homepage contains other information beyond this, as well as a selection of my photographs.
